Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction and Bruxism

Holmdel, NJ Dentist Gentle Dental

You may be one of the millions of Americans who suffer from tooth grinding(Bruxism).  Bruxism is a common habit of clenching or grinding your teeth, day or night, more during stress. Unfortunately, the pressure applied at night does 9 times more damage than during a day. The muscles which help to chew food are the same which make you grind. Consequently, these muscles feel sore and tired and give you pain in the head, neck, ears or face. It also wears away tooth enamel. Teeth can become sensitive to cold or pressure and you may end up fracturing teeth and loosing them, too. If untreated, it can cause severe problems with your Temporomandibular joint. This is the hinge joint, in front of your ears, which connects lower jaw to the skull and allows you to open and close the mouth. If you suspect you suffer from bruxism, let us know. It usually happens due to misaligned teeth or collapsed or deep bite. Stress and anxiety play big role in causing bruxism. By carefully monitoring and managing stress, you can reduce bruxism.

To help protect your teeth, your muscles and joint, to reduce the damage, you need a mouth piece. We can make you a night guard or a TMJ splint, depending on the severity of the damage, to wear at night only or 24 hours, to reduce the damage or to heal the problem. Prevention is always better than cure. If untreated, it can cause earache, headache, dizziness, ringing in the ears, vertigo and hearing loss. We Treat More Than Teeth…. If you have any of these conditions, please let us know, you may be suffering from TMJ D
